the descent
year 3 semester 1
architectural structures & forces - group project
the descent is a museum that fuses art and architecture together. to create an illusion of the top module “floating”, we designed a lift core which does not connect to the outside of the module. the second module is a rotated form, connecting both the first and third modules. this was designed to be similar to a transitional space, guiding visitors downwards. the final module is split into two - the upper part is cantilevered to give the illusion of it floating, while the other half is fully connected to the ground. this museum was conceived as a sequential, sensory journey that guides visitors from a luminous opening at the beginning to a grounded and comfortable conclusion. the architecture itself is a primary curator of experience using light, volume and spatial progression to enhance the artwork.
starting at the top, the first space users experience is the large sculpture and art area, where the large skylight spanning across the top allows for ample light to enter the space. combined with the high ceiling and large skylight, users can be fully immersed in the exhibits occupying the space. the staggered floor plates aims to create a sense of hierarchy, reiterating the descending movement throughout the space.
the second space that users will experience is the interactive art exhibit. users walk down a narrow path from the start to the end of this module, imitating the feeling of a bridge. the central large skylight allows for ample natural light, while the slanted walls invoke a feeling of openness in the space.
the last space that users will experience is the wall art area. this module is split into two parts - the upper part sloping down to a mid-height landing, connecting to the second part, where the slope connects to the ground floor and exit. as users walk through the space, they would be able to experience a sense of comfort as they exit the museum.
